Racing, racing and more racing

Sorry I have not translated the last few stories. The last weeks existed out of: Monday till Friday working and training and the weekends racing and travelling. I had no time and energy to write some  news. I will give a short summary of the last 3 weeks and will try to better my life by posting some blogs more often

On Monday 24th of may we had Regional Championships. As I am a member of NWVG (a club in the north) I had to start in Emmen for the Northern Regional Champs. 12 loops of 6 kilomter eacht with start and finish on the cycle track.

A smaller group at the start than the previous races so for me a nice opportunity to have a good race and try to be part of the "game". AFter a few laps a group of 6 had breaken away with 3 of our team. So we could not really ride hard anymore. I was in the group behind the six and Josephine (another team mate) in the next group. Not everyone was doing some work on the bike as they said they could not. But coming to the finish sprint suddenly they boosted from energy and another girl and me, who did most of the work, finished in the back. Well welcome to the world of cycling . I finished 16th. The  next weekend would follow a range of 6 races in 9 days.

The weekend of 29th and 30st of May I had to ride double again. Saturday in Wijk en Aalburg and Sunday Ronostrand in Roden. Wijk en Aalburg did not go so well. I was too far in the back again and lost touch with the first peloton. We kept on riding but had to stop before the final loop. My teammate Winanda had a good race today and got her points for Dutch Champs. After the race Nina, her boyfriend and I went to my parents to stay the night as we had to start very early in the North the next morning. At 6:15 am the alarm clock rang. Had some breakfast and off to Roden. Cloudy but we were lucky and it did not start raining cats and dogs until after the race. This race was going much better. I was up in the front a lot. However the mass sprint is still not my thing and so I finished in the back of the peloton again. At least I was one of the 60% that finished.

Wednesday June 2nd Parel vd Veluwe. A very nervous race with many small roads. Unfortunately I fell again. My chain did not want to go around anymore. The spare bike with my pedals had been given to a team mate already but luckily a new wheel also made it possible to continue. I had to get back between the cars again, it is almost becoming a hobby. I got some tips from some following cars and managed to get back to the peloton. However, I did not manage to get to the front again and had a tough time again at the jojo end. The peloton splited in several pieces and one little lap for the end we were taken out of the race. Some experience, tips and a huge, bleu, scratched tie and open elbow richer.

Friday 4th of June 6:30 pm Criterium Hengelo. After my difficult and unlucky start of the season I still wanted to try to get some National Champ points. So I drove to Hengelo on Friday. Warm weather and finally some good legs. It was going well but still the sprinting problem. One loop for the end I managed to move up and was in the front. But then the last loop and before I know what is happening I am in the back and so finished 24th and so no points (top 20). Saturday 1 pm Omloop van Ijsseldelta (Zwolle). A race with many narrow roads on the dikes. I managed to ride okay and once was even away from the peloton with some girls but that was of short notice. In the end I was too far behind in the back again. Kirsten Wild won the sprint. I also have to look at the positive side and finished last 3 races now. Then finally the 9th race of this seqeunce. Sunday June 6th Thermen Kasseien Omloop Exloo. An UCI race over cobble stones around Exloo. A nice race in which everyone wants to be in the front before the cobble stones. I tried to get to the front on all sides but no succes. On the first cobble stones it broke but we managed to get back to the peloton with a small group. However I still did not manage to get to the front enough for the second lot and it was over. I was empty from all the races and had no power anymore.

After this period I needed some rest. However I also became ill and was not fit the entire week. I did not train much and made sure I ate healthy. On Friday I still did not feel well. I wanted the weekend off racing but as I will not race the coming weeks and my team captain had put me on the start list anyway I decided to go. Not really smart ofcourse. On Saturday 12th of June I was on the start line of Omloop van Kerspelen in Drogeham. 3 laps of 30 kilometers and 2 of 7 kilometers. The first loop I survived but did not feel good and felt that my body was not fit enough for this race. I should not have started but you can not go back in time. Time for recovery now and make sure I am getting fit again. Then a new period of some good training. I do not know which race I have to do for the next part of the season.

Something that became clear to me is that cycliing is different than triathlon concerning periodising and tapering. Later more about this.
